As monumental years in American automobiles go, 1967 has to be considered one of the all-time greats. The Camaro Z/28 burst onto the scene. Chevrolet also began offering the fabled L88 Corvette and L79 Nova. And Ford and Mopar showed up strong with the ’67 GT500 and Charger426 HEMI fastback, respectively.

But the star of the show, according to Motor Trend, was the Mercury Cougar, which was named Motor Trend Car of the Year.

The original Cougar accounted for 40 percent of Lincoln-Mercury sales in 1967. It shared its original chassis powertrain with the Ford Mustang, although it had a slightly longer wheelbase.

Although the Cougar lasted for eight generations (until 2002), it’s hard to beat the original. We spotted this first-generation Mercury Cougar in Summit Racing’s Ohio Retail Store parking lot.
